The Vols coaching staff has been actively pursuing quality, top-notch defensive backs. Although, to this point, they had not yet received the commitment of a cornerback. But on Friday, that changed when 2019 CB Warren Burrell pledged to Tennessee.
Burrell fits the mold of what Vols head man Jeremy Pruitt wants in a cornerback, more specifically, he’s a long and rangy athlete. 247 Sports has Burrell pegged at 6-foot and 166 pounds.
Warren’s high school program, North Gwinnett, was the Georgia 7A state champions. 7A ball in Georgia is cream of the crop for high school football, so there is no questioning the competition that Burrell consistently faces. On top of that, Burrell was an all-state performer during the 2017 season.
To get Burrell’s commitment, Tennessee had to fend off other big time programs like Florida and North Carolina State. In addition to the offers that he looked at most sincerely, Burrell also holds north of 25 official offers from major programs littered across America.
As was mentioned above, he is a very rangy player and fits what Pruitt wants in the defensive backfield to a T. He can cover a ton of ground, possesses great ball skills, and he can also lower the boom on ball carriers.
