Derrick Ansley reportedly expected to be hired by Vols as defensive assistant

This could end up being the shortest coaching search in Tennessee football history.

On the same day that news broke of Vols defensive backs coach Terry Fair being let go, a new defensive staffer has reportedly already been found.

A report from GoVols247 states that Oakland Raiders defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley will be hired by UT to be a defensive coach of some kind “barring any unforeseen circumstance.”

And Ansley is certainly no stranger to Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt. The two worked together at Alabama first in 2010 and 2011 and then again in 2016 and 2017. During their first stint on the same staff, Pruitt was serving as the Tide’s defensive backs coach while Ansley was a graduate assistant. During the more recent stint, Pruitt was Bama’s defensive coordinator while Ansley was UA’s DB coach.

Ansley is also no stranger to the University of Tennessee. He worked as the Vols’ secondary coach under Derek Dooley in 2012. Ansley is a native of Tallassee, AL and played college football from 2001 to 2005 at Troy.

According to the GoVols247 report, Ansley could be taking on a co-defensive coordinator role at UT, but we’ll likely have to wait for an official announcement before knowing his exact standing on Pruitt’s staff.
