The current hype around Tennessee’s basketball team is pretty astounding.
Some analysts think the Vols will be a top 10 or even a top 5 team in the coming season. Others have called them a “Final Four competitor.” The accolades for the team that finished with a 26-9 record a year ago have been bountiful.
Now, we can add one more glowing review to that list with a new article from NCAA.com. In the piece, writer Joe Boozell posits that this could be the best roster the Vols have ever had.
Here’s a snippet from what Boozell said…
“Continuity is on their side, but the defense is what’s going to scare opponents. Tennessee ranked sixth in defensive efficiency last year; with another season of learning one another’s tendencies, the Volunteers could have the best defense in college hoops. Williams is a two-way monster, Admiral Schofield is a wrecking ball who has sneaky quickness, and the guards are feisty. It’s extremely hard to screen Tennessee’s perimeter players because of their ball pressure. Wreaking havoc without fouling is a skill, and the Volunteers have plenty of players who can do it. … Tennessee has had some really good teams in the past. It won 31 games in 2007-08, but the Volunteers have never reached a Final Four.”
So, there you have it. Even more praise for what is perhaps the best sports team the Vols have at the moment. Is this UT’s best basketball team ever? I guess we’ll see when the season begins in an exhibition matchup against Tusculum on October 31st.
